Schakowsky Statement on Memorial Day

May 27, 2024

EVANSTON – Today, U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), released the following statement in observance of Memorial Day:

“Throughout our nation’s long history, millions of brave men and women have answered the call of duty and have fought to protect our country and our ideals.  On Memorial Day, we come together to honor and remember those service members who made the ultimate sacrifice. We are free because they were brave.

“We will never forget those who lost their lives in battle, those who are missing in action, and those who are prisoners of war. Today, we grieve with their families, and continue to offer our unwavering support.

“In paying tribute to our fallen heroes, we must recommit to honoring our active-duty military personnel and our veterans. Not only do they deserve our respect and recognition, but they also deserve to know that we have their backs. We owe them an enormous debt and must ensure that they receive the health care, education, housing, and other benefits that they have earned. Any veteran or active-duty military personnel in need of assistance, please reach out my office.

“This Memorial Day, and every day, let us pay homage to the bravery and sacrifice of our service members. Please be sure to take time today to remember and honor the sacrifices so many have made for this great nation."
