Schakowsky Statement on National Emergency Declaration

February 15, 2019

WASHINGTON– Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip, released the following statement on the President’s declaration of a national emergency:

“The President’s declaration of a national emergency on the southern border is not only a cruel political stunt, but also a clear violation of Congressional intent. There is no emergency on the southern border. Congress has not appropriated money for his senseless and inhumane wall, and this unauthorized act cannot be tolerated within American democracy.

The President made a campaign promise, based on a lie, to build a medieval wall from sea to sea that was rejected by every member of Congress who represents a district along our southern border. He also claimed that Mexico would pay for it. Bipartisan members of the House and Senate will not tolerate such an abuse of power.

I will work with my colleagues to reverse this unconstitutional action. This President is out of his mind. Thankfully a Democratic House majority is standing in the way of his tyrannical actions.”
