Schakowsky Statement on New Memorandum of Understanding With Israel

September 14, 2016

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky released the following statement after it was announced that the United States and Israel had reached a 10 year Memorandum of Understanding on security assistance with the current agreement set to expire:

“The security and protection of Israel must remain our top policy goal in the Middle East. The agreement on military aid between our two countries is welcome news. I strongly believe in the importance of this aid, which is critical to help Israel maintain its qualitative military advantage and to ensure the safety and security of its citizens. There has been no greater friend to the Israeli people and their continued security than President Barack Obama, who has time after time stood with Israel and its security.

“I support the safety of Israel and am pleased that this agreement continues to strengthen the bond between our countries. At the same time, I believe that we must continue to work for a peace agreement between Israelis and Palestinians which is crucial to the lasting security of Israel. I will continue to push for a comprehensive final status agreement for a two-state solution that results in a Jewish, democratic Israel and an economically viable state for the Palestinians.”
