Schakowsky Statement On The Passing of Shimon Peres

September 28, 2016

Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky released the following statement on the passing of former Israeli Prime Ministerand President Shimon Peres:

“Shimon Peres was a tireless advocate for peace and a man who not only helped shape the future of Israel, but was present at its birth. Shimon Peres was an exemplary statesman who, while always working for the security of Israel, was also working to build bonds with its neighbors. As his son has recalled, he was known to say, “you are only as good as the cause you serve.” His cause was peace and his efforts helped lead to the Oslo Accords, for which he earned a Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 along with Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat. He said, “As a bird cannot fly with one wing, as a man cannot applaud with one hand, so a country cannot make peace just with one side, with itself. For peace, we need the two of us.” I join with millions around the world in mourning a true visionary and a founding father of the nation of Israel. The best way that we can honor his legacy is to keep working for peace. May his memory be for a blessing.”
