Schakowsky statement on President Trump's budget of broken promises

May 22, 2017

Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky released the following statement ahead of President Trump’s budget proposal for fiscal year 2018 (FY18), which is expected to come out tomorrow:

“Throughout his campaign, Donald Trump promised voters time and time again that he would not cut Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Just one year ago, President Trump tweeted ‘I was the first & only potential GOP candidate to state there will be no cuts to Social Security, Medicare & Medicaid.’

“Now, as President, his first budget will reportedly propose massive cuts to those same programs. Reports indicate that it will slash funding for Social Security Disability Insurance, cut Medicaid by at least $800 billion, and shorten the life of the Medicare Trust Fund. President Trump’s proposal tomorrow is a collection of broken promises to the American people. As a member of the House Budget Committee, I will resist his outrageous proposals every step of the way.”
