Schakowsky statement on President Trump's decision to end Temporary Protected Status for Haiti

November 21, 2017

Today Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Chief Deputy Whip, released the following statement on President Trump's decision to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti.

President Trump has thrown the lives of 50,000 Haitians into chaos. Many of us worked hard to persuade the Administration to reach a different decision and will continue to do whatever I can to protect Haitians who are living and working in our community. We recognize the dangers of returning these individuals to Haiti, a country that is still recovering from a terrible earthquake, major hurricanes, and a widespread cholera epidemic. The President’s decision is not reflective of our values as a nation. In the face of the Trump Administration’s callousness, Congress must now act to protect TSP recipients from Haiti and other countries from deportations that will put them at risk.
