Schakowsky statement on President Trump's meeting with Kim Jong-un
“It is heartening to see President Trump engaging in diplomacy instead of hurling childish insults at a nuclear-armed dictator via Twitter. This meeting was a great photo op both for an American President seeking to prove his deal-making skills and for a despotic tyrant looking to appear powerful on the world stage. Unfortunately, the ‘agreement’ that came out of it includes no firm commitments from North Korea, no reporting or inspections regimes, no plan for denuclearization, and nothing at all that should reassure the American people that North Korea will put an end to its barbaric behavior. The American people, and the world, now deserve real action and detail-oriented negotiation from the Trump Administration with the counsel of issue-area experts.
“Last night was a handshake. The work begins today.”
