Schakowsky statement on President Trump's proposed deportation force

February 23, 2017

"President Trump’s plans to target millions of immigrants with his deportation force have struck fear in the hearts of immigrants and their loved ones across my district and the country. The Department of Homeland Security has now detailed how it will carry out the President’s executive orders. The resulting directives are cruel and heartless. By broadening the scope of individuals targeted for deportation, the Trump Administration will tear more families apart – in some cases leaving American children without their parents.

“I join with concerned members of our community in opposing the directives issued by the Administration. I have cosponsored the Protecting Our Border Communities Act and the Community Trust Act to push back against the President's executive actions and guidances on immigration. I will also fight any efforts in Congress to fund these inhumane orders.

“In these troubling times, it is more important than ever for immigrants, their loved ones, and all those who will stand up for their neighbors – regardless of immigration status – to know their rights under the law. I am distributing materials to educate my constituents about their rights, and I encourage this information to be shared throughout our community.”
