Schakowsky Statement on Prime Minister Modi Addressing the Joint Session of Congress
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky released the following statement after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a Joint Session of Congress:
As someone who proudly represents a large constituency of Indian Americans, I welcome the visit of Prime Minister Narenda Modi. His well-received speech to a Joint Session of Congress has helped to strengthen the existing bond of cooperation and friendship between the oldest Democracy in the world, the United States, and the largest, India with 1.25 billion people. I appreciate the Prime Minister’s remarks in support of “freedom of faith, speech and franchise, and equality of all citizens, regardless of background.” The Prime Minister was helpful in Paris, working with the United States to adopt the Climate Agreement, and reiterated his support today, saying, “The protection of environment and caring for the planet is central to our shared vision of a just world.” As a member of the India Caucus, I look forward to working with our friends in India to help their country and ours always live up to our shared aspirations of equality and freedom.
