Schakowsky Statement Recognizing Attorney General Eric Holder's Decades of Service

September 26, 2014

(Washington, D.C.) Rep. Schakowsky released the following statement in response to Attorney General Eric Holder’s announcement that he will resign from his position:

“Attorney General Holder has dedicated his career to making this country better and more just for all Americans. I’m grateful for all that he has accomplished over the past six years in the Obama Administration.

Among his accomplishments, Attorney General Holder instituted reforms for mandatory minimum sentencing in low-level, non-violent drug offenses and worked to reduce the mass incarceration of young men of color. He played a pivotal role in ending federal discrimination against members of the LGBT community and is a staunch defender of ensuring that American citizens can exercise their fundamental right to vote.

Like so many Americans across the country, I was particularly proud of the leadership he recently demonstrated in Ferguson, Missouri, visiting the community to meet with residents and young people and describing his own experiences dealing with racial discrimination.

The United States is a better country because of Eric Holder’s service. I wish him well and I look forward to his next steps in championing the causes he cares so deeply about.”
