Schakowsky Statement Recognizing MLK Day

January 21, 2019

Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip and Vice Chair of the Democracy Reform Task Force released the following statement honoring MLK Day:

“Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, ‘Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.’

“There are roughly 800,000 federal workers suffering from the lack of action of President Trump and Senate Republicans to end this shutdown. Dr. King’s words remind us to always remain vocal on the blatant disrespect and discriminatory actions of people in power.

“Republicans continue to hold federal employees as leverage to build a racist ill-advised wall damaging the very fabric of our country’s legacy as a nation of immigrants. This is an injustice. I am reminded on this day honoring the late Reverend to always speak up and fight for those wronged. It is time for President Trump and Sen. Mitch McConnell to reopen the government and pay hard-working American citizens what they deserve.”
