Schakowsky statement on reports that President Trump will pull out of the Paris Climate Agreement
Representative Jan Schakowsky issued the following statement in response to reports that the Trump Administration will pull the United States out of the Paris Climate Accord:
“If President Trump decides to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris Climate Agreement, it will be a win for big oil and gas companies at the expense of our children’s and grandchildren’s future. The Paris Agreement was a milestone in the global effort to address our changing climate, bringing all major parties to the table. By stepping out now, President Trump sends the message that he puts oil company profits ahead of the planet and that the U.S. is not a reliable partner.
“For a candidate who promised to make America great again, President Trump has left our nation increasingly diminished and isolated. We saw it when he visited Europe last week, and his withdrawal from the Paris Agreement would only make it clearer. We should be debating how to accomplish our commitment to reduce pollution, not retreating from the world stage. Unfortunately, we have a President who is unable or unwilling to provide the leadership we need. That is why state, local, and private-sector efforts are now more critical than ever to pursuing clean energy and combatting climate change.”
