Schakowsky Statement on Republican Benghazi Report
Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (IL-09) released the following statement after Republican Members of the Select Committee on Benghazi released a report that contained no new evidence of wrongdoing:
“House Republicans have wasted the American taxpayers time and money with their drawn out, partisan attack on Hillary Clinton via the Select Committee on Benghazi. This investigation lasted over two years, cost the taxpayer $7 million and found no evidence of wrongdoing. Instead of honoring the lives of the four Americans who were killed in Benghazi, House Republicans politicized their deaths. This investigation uncovered no new information, but it was never about the facts. As detailed in the separate report released yesterday by Democrats on the Committee, Republicans withheld transcripts, concealed evidence, and leaked incomplete and misleading testimony to fit their partisan narrative. The Democratic report also found that while the security measures in place were inadequate, there is nothing the military could have done differently that would have saved lives that night.
I participated in the Benghazi investigation conducted by the Intelligence Committee, which was done in a bipartisan manner. That report, in addition to the ones done by seven other committees; also found no evidence of wrongdoing. From the start, this should have been about learning from this tragedy and taking steps to protect our diplomatic corps around the world. Instead this tragedy was turned a political attack.”
