Press Release

WASHINGTON— Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), a Senior Chief Deputy Whip and Chair of the Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, issued the following statement after the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced new steps to eliminate deadly hazards from residential elevators:

“This voluntary recall of dangerous residential elevators is long overdue, but I am pleased the CPSC took this critical step to protect children from horrible and preventable deaths and injuries. Those manufacturers who refused to cooperate with the CPSC must do so immediately – and the CPSC must use all tools at its disposal to ensure those companies are protecting consumers from this unacceptable risk. As Chair of the House Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee, I will explore all avenues to make sure that all residential elevator companies fully comply with the safety standards needed to protect children.”
