Schakowsky Statement on the SCOTUS DACA Decision

January 22, 2019

Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip and Vice Chair of the Democracy Reform Task Force, released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s decision not to review the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program:

“The Supreme Court's decision to decline a review of the Trump Administration's executive actions on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program leaves thousands of recipients in limbo. It is crucial, now more than ever, for Congress to act. Roughly 700,000 'Dreamers' are depending on us, and we must show up for them.

"I demand President Trump end his hostage-taking of immigrants and government workers over a discriminatory wall that will not end migration, drug smuggling, or terrorism. It is long overdue for the President to end this senseless shutdown and reopen the government. Playing political games with the lives of innocent people who were brought to the U.S. as children over a campaign gimmick is not only cruel, but it damages the historical legacy of our great nation.

"Democrats support border security and Dreamers. We are ready to negotiate but not until the government shutdown ends and the Americans held hostages are freed.

"I refuse to support the Trump Administration's reckless wall and will continue to stand with Dreamers and their parents."
