Schakowsky Statement on SCOTUS Decision Allowing Transgender Military Ban
Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip and Vice Chair of the Democracy Reform Task Force, released the following statement after the U.S. Supreme Court decision to lift nationwide injunctions allowing the Trump administration's policy, hindering transgender troops from serving in the military, to go into effect:
“The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to allow the Trump administration's transgender military ban to go into effect, as the appeal process continues in the lower courts, directly violates the rights of hundreds of Americans who want nothing more than to serve their country. These soldiers are patriots currently serving with valor, and they are being victimized by the country they have sworn to protect and serve.
“We were moving forward, as a nation, towards equality for LGBTQ+ identifying individuals after the ban was lifted in 2016. Now, the Trump Administration continues to insert its transphobic and homophobic policies into every agency of the government.
“It is imperative that the Supreme Court rule in favor of our transgender troops, who want nothing more than to fight for our freedoms. I thank them for the commitment to service, and their dignity in the face of intense and misguided discrimination.”
