Press Release

EVANSTON – Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip and Chair of the Energy and Commerce Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee, issued the following statement after the U.S. Senate voted to acquit former President Donald Trump:

“Today, 57 Senators, Republicans, Democrats and Independents alike, voted to convict former President Donald Trump and by doing so stood up for our democracy and our constitution. The violent insurrection on January 6th that took several lives, injured and maimed many more, and compromised our national security would not have happened but for former President Trump’s continued push of the big lie. My colleagues who served as the House Impeachment Managers proved beyond a reasonable doubt that the mob acted at the urging and incitement of the former President. Unfortunately, 43 cowards in the Senate blessed the actions of the Trump-inspired mob that put their very lives, and the lives of their colleagues, staff and that of Vice President Pence, in danger that day. It is even more pathetic that Minority Leader McConnell refused to accept the Articles of Impeachment while Trump was still in office, and then today used that as an excuse in his vote to acquit, before going on the floor to concede the House Impeachment Managers won on the facts. The House Impeachment Managers brilliantly conveyed the crimes of Donald Trump and etched in history his shameful legacy.”
