Schakowsky Statement on Trump Administration's Decision to Send Asylum Seekers to Mexico
Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip and Vice Chair of the Democracy Reform Task Force, released the following statement regarding the Trump Administration’s decision to start sending asylum seekers to Mexico tomorrow:
“I am once again appalled by the Trump Administration’s treatment of refugees seeking safety in the United States. As if withholding the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of federal employees over his senseless border wall isn’t enough, President Trump is sending vulnerable men, women and children to Mexico, to just sit and wait to be processed for asylum, endangering their lives.
“Meanwhile, Mexican officials have said they will not accept any refugees who might be put in harm’s way while in their country. President Trump has turned his back on vulnerable people including women and children, who are fleeing for their lives. Shame on you Mr. President; this is not what our great nation stands for.
“I call on you to stop your assault on legal asylum seekers and follow the law as intended by Congress. Let innocent people seeking refuge remain in the U.S. while their cases are processed.
