Schakowsky Statement on Trump Impeachment Investigation

September 24, 2019

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip, issued the following statement:

"Today, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announced that the House of Representatives will move forward an official impeachment investigation into this President's abuses of power. I am fully supportive of this effort and will not stop fighting until this President is held accountable, our elections are secure, and faith in our democracy is restored.

"As a former member of the House Select Committee on Intelligence, I take our national security very seriously. The President admitted that he tried to extort a foreign attack on our elections. A member of the intelligence community filed a whistleblower complaint because this act was so egregious. The Trump-appointed Inspector General even concluded that this complaint is related to a matter of 'urgent concern' and must be disclosed to Congress. The Acting Director of National Intelligence, who will appear before Congress on Thursday, is violating federal law by refusing to turn over the whistleblower complaint. In response, the Senate unanimously passed a bipartisan resolution calling on the Administration to release the whistleblower complaint. The House will vote on a similar resolution tomorrow.

"President Trump's actions represent the highest type of crimes that threaten the very fabric of our democracy. While the House Committees have been relentlessly conducting oversight hearings and investigations into this Administration's corruption, it is clear that an official impeachment investigation is the only avenue we have left to hold this President accountable.

"It is also clear, now more than ever, that this President only cares about one thing – himself. He does not care about our Constitution, our nation, or our people. He must go, whether through impeachment or voting him out of office in 2020, he must go. I will make sure of this and that the President finally understands that no one is above the law."
