Schakowsky Statement on Trump's Speech
Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip and Vice Chair of the Democracy Reform Task Force, offered the following statement responding to President Trump’s Speech:
“President Trump’s proposal falls well short of a good faith effort to reopen the government or address the humanitarian crisis that he created at the border.
“His offer has already been rejected by Democratic negotiators. He never mentions the 800,000 federal workers who are suffering more every day without a paycheck, or the millions of Americans who are devastated by the shutdown. He knows the likelihood of his weak proposal being passed by the House and Senate is farfetched.
“I have said it before, and I will say it again - enough is enough. It is time to immediately reopen the government. Once that happens, we can sit down and discuss a real plan to secure our border and fix immigration laws in a bipartisan way. The President is failing miserably in his responsibility to take care of federal workers and their families. He is tainting our proud tradition as a nation of immigrants. It is time to end the political games and begin repairing the damage he has done.”
