Schakowsky Statement on the Two-Year Anniversary of the Successful Iran Nuclear Agreement

July 14, 2017

Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Chief Deputy Whip, released the following statement marking the two-year anniversary of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iran Deal:

“Today we celebrate the two-year anniversary of a triumph of diplomacy. President Obama’s leadership and the work of the P5+1 allies allowed us to prevent a nuclear-armed Iran without the use of violence. Moving forward, it is imperative that we remain vigilant of Iran and use the lessons learned from crafting this nuclear agreement to address their ballistic missile activities and human rights violations. It is also crucial that the United States maintains its firm commitment to this agreement – we must ignore the uninformed calls to abandon the deal. Instead, we should use the JCPOA as a model for our foreign policy going forward. The Iran deal demonstrates that it is possible and preferable for the United States to exert strong leadership around the world using diplomacy.”
