Schakowsky Statement on Violence Against Women Act
September 13, 2009
WASHINGTON, DC (September 13, 2009) -- Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-IL, Chairwoman of the Congressional Women's Caucus, released the following statement to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act that was signed into law on September 13, 1994 by President Bill Clinton."For fifteen years, the Violence Against Women Act has made women and girls more safe and more secure. Law enforcement agencies were given resources to improve investigation capabilities, prosecutors were given more aggressive prosecution tools, and the door was opened for justice to be served in cases that prosecutors did not pursue. We still have much to do to improve the quality of life for women at home and around the world but today we pause to celebrate the great step forward our society made with this legislation."
