Schakowsky's Statement on Boehner's Idea to Cut Social Security to Fund Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan
WASHINGTON, DC — (June 29, 2010) Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) issued the following statement in response to House Minority Leader John Boehner's support for cutting Social Security to pay for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
"I suppose the good news is that John Boehner finally understands we actually need to pay for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq–wars that went unfunded during the Bush Administration and the Republican Congress and, as of today, have cost over $1 trillion and more than 5,500 American lives. The incredibly bad news is Boehner's solution: To fund those wars by cutting Social Security. Â Is there anything more reckless or obscene on the part of Republican leadership than to make seniors, disabled workers, widows and orphans foot the bill?...
