Statement on Independence Day
Washington, DC (July 4, 2013) — Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement celebrating Independence Day:
"On Independence Day, we are reminded of the ties that bind us together as Americans. On this date 237 years ago, men and women from all walks of life banded together around the principle that we are all created equal and are endowed with the unalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
"Last month, we rejoiced with our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters when the Supreme Court ruled that they, too, deserve the freedom, rights and opportunities guaranteed under our Constitution. We can also give 11 million immigrants who long to officially pledge loyalty to the stars and stripes the path to citizenship.
"As we celebrate the birth of our nation, we are reminded of our brave men and women serving overseas, fighting for values our country was founded on. Our nation is strongest when we are united and I wish everyone a happy and safe Independence Day."
