Statement on Voting Against the Making College More Expensive Act

May 23, 2013

Washington, DC (May 23, 2013) — Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement on the Making College More Expensive Act:

"I voted against the House Republican led bill which would burden students with an additional $3.7 billion in student debt over the next 10 years. Millions of students rely on student loans to make a college education affordable and they can't afford the burden of increased interest costs.

"The Making College More Expensive Act would make students pay additional interest costs, forcing future students into increased debt and deterring their ability to purchase homes and cars. Students and their families cannot afford this. Well-educated students are productive workers, grow the middle class and help expand our economy. Our students need access to more affordable student loans rather than increased student loan interest rates.

"We must act now to prevent student loan interest rates from doubling on July 1st and I urge my colleagues on the other side of the isle to work with us to come up a comprehensive solution to improve college affordability."
