CONGRESSWOMAN SCHAKOWSKY'S STATEMENT ON THE AMERICAN DREAM AND PROMISE ACT
WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip, made the following statement today after the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 6, the American Dream and Promise Act:
“As a first generation American and daughter of immigrants, I am so proud to have cosponsored, voted for, and help pass the American Dream and Promise Act, H.R. 6. This legislation ensures that Dreamers, Temporary Protective Status (TPS) holders, and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) recipients are protected from detention and deportation and have a pathway to U.S. citizenship.
“Immigrants, including Dreamers and TPS/DED recipients, are the backbone of our great nation and have long contributed to our economy, culture, and society. They are our family members, friends, coworkers, employers, and neighbors. They serve in the U.S. military and they pay taxes. They are true Americans and should be treated as such. The average TPS holder has lived in the United States for 22 years, and the average Dreamer moved to the U.S. at age six and has lived here their entire adult life. The majority own homes and have families, many own businesses, thousands attend school or are teachers, and they are all vital to the economic strength and cultural diversity of our nation.
“It is long overdue that we secure the futures of over 2 million American Dreamers and TPS/DED recipients. I call on my colleagues in the Senate to do the right thing and protect our families, communities, businesses, and the nation ---pass the American Dream and Promise Act now!”
