FAMILIES OF SOLDIERS SERVING IN IRAQ
JOIN SCHAKOWSKY TO DEMAND THE TRUTH
ANNOUNCE SUPPORT FOR INDEPENDENT COMMISSION
TO INVESTIGATE WHETHER BUSH ADMINISTRATION
EXAGGERATED OR MANIPULATED EVIDENCE ABOUT IRAQ
CHICAGO, IL - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) today applauded the courage of military families and those ordinary Americans who are demanding answers from President Bush about whether his administration exaggerated or manipulated evidence to bolster its case for war against Iraq.
"The justification for war by President Bush was at best exaggerated and at worst fabricated. The American people are demanding answers as to why their sons and daughters, husbands and wives are there in the first place," Schakowsky said.
At a news conference and rally in the Dirksen Federal Building in Chicago, Schakowsky was joined by parents and spouses of soldiers serving in Iraq. They announced their support for H.R. 2625, legislation authored by U.S. Representative Henry Waxman, to create an independent commission - modeled after the September 11 Commission.
The Commission would examine the intelligence about Iraq, representations made by executive branch officials about this intelligence, and whether the Bush Administration distorted evidence about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction. The bill is cosponsored by 110 members, including 26 who voted in support of sending U.S. troops to Iraq. More than 420,000 people have signed a petition in support of H.R. 2625 posted on MoveOn.org.
