House Democratic Caucus Seniors Task Force Chairs Celebrate 78th Anniversary of Social Security
Washington, DC (August 14, 2013) — Rep. Jan Schakowsky (IL-09) and Rep. Doris Matsui (CA-06) Co-chairs of the House Democratic Caucus Seniors Task Force released the following statement on the 78th Anniversary of Social Security:
"Today all Americans are reminded that Social Security is one of our nation's most invaluable treasures," said Rep. Schakowsky. "After a lifetime of working hard, seniors consider Social Security an earned benefit. Social Security allows our seniors to retire with dignity, respect and the comfort of knowing they will have a modest income they can count on in retirement. As a member of the Seniors Task Force, I will tirelessly oppose any cuts to Social Security and work to strengthen and secure Social Security for our seniors."
"Social Security is a pillar of our society, representing our nation's commitment to preserving the well-being and dignity of Americans as they grow older," said Rep. Matsui. "For 78 years, Americans have been working hard and contributing to Social Security with every paycheck. Since its inception, Social Security has never one been a day late or a dollar short. Those who have worked hard and played by the rules deserve a secure retirement. I will continue to advocate with my colleagues on the Seniors Task Force to protect and preserve it."
