Obamacare Anniversary and Enrollment Event in Chicago

March 22, 2014

Chicago – Four years ago tomorrow President Barack Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law. Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (IL-09); Jennifer Koehler of Get Covered Illinois; Diana Bonete of Get Covered America; Dwyaine Betts, William Zars, Erin McDonald (ACA enrollees) and Laura Garza (certified navigator) are speaking during a 4th anniversary celebration and enrollment event from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Truman College (1145 W. Wilson Avenue) in Chicago.

Thanks to the Affordable Care Act:

• No American, including 5.6 million Illinoisans, can ever again be denied coverage because they have a pre-existing condition.

• More than 313,000 Illinoisans have gotten coverage through Get Covered Illinois: 114,000 through the Marketplace, nearly 200,000 through Medicaid.

• No woman can ever again be charged a higher premium just because she’s a woman.

• No American ever again has to worry that one major illness will mean bankruptcy for their family.

• No senior will ever again have to pay a co-pay for key preventive services, such as cancer screenings.

“I have talked with people in my District who are already getting life-saving care that they couldn’t afford before the Affordable Care Act,” said Congresswoman Schakowsky. “March 23, 2010 was the proudest day of my career in public service because we, as Americans, decided that it was important that we all have access to quality, affordable healthcare. I am thrilled to work with Get Covered Illinois, Get Covered America, state, city and local officials to make sure our residents have the care they need. As we approach the March 31 deadline to enroll in health plans through the Marketplace, I encourage everyone to get covered.”
