Recovery Act Funds Provide Meals for Low-Income Elderly

More then $3 Million is Coming to Illinois for Elderly Nutrition Programs Throughout the State
WASHINGTON, DC (March 18, 2009) — Following Vice President Joe Biden's announcement that the Department of Health and Human Services would release more then $100 million in Recovery Act funding to provide meals to low-income elderly, Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement:
"The strain placed on Chicago nutrition programs has greatly increased over the past few months. Elderly Americans are having to make difficult choices between paying bills and buying food, but this money will go a long way to alleviate their need by providing nutritious meals. These funds are urgently needed and will help us begin economic recovery....
Illinois is expected to receive $3,770,526 that will be disbursed throughout the state to elderly nutrition projects. The funds will provide meals to seniors in need of food, restore nutrition services that have been cut and restore positions which may have been eliminated or reduced.
