Rep. Schakowsky to Serve on House Budget Committee
Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky released the following statement after being selected to join the House Budget Committee. She is also a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, where she serves as Ranking Member of the Digital Commerce and Consumer Protection Subcommittee, as well as a member of the Health and Oversight & Investigations Subcommittees.
“I am honored that my Democratic colleagues have selected me to serve on the House Budget Committee. I will forcefully resist any proposals that undermine the middle class and retirees in order to give tax breaks to the rich.As the richest country in the world at the richest point in our history, we need a budget that asks millionaires, billionaires and highly profitable corporations to pay their fair share so we can invest more in our country and in working men and women.
“I come to the Committee with key principles for our federal budget: reduce income inequality, support seniors and low- and middle-income families, invest in our country’s future, find responsible savings, and actually solve problems instead of shifting costs to those who can least afford it.
“In the coming months, the House Budget Committee will be debating the future of Americans’ health care. I am committed to building on the successes of the Affordable Care Act and working to make health care more affordable and accessible. I will also do everything in my power to ensure that programs like Medicare and Medicaid, which provide critical health care coverage to our most vulnerable citizens, are maintained for generations to come. I look forward to working with my colleagues on the Budget Committee to strengthen and improve these vital programs.”
