Schakowsky Announces Details of $3.4 Million in Community Funded Projects for Illinois' 9th

March 14, 2022

EVANSTON - Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip and Chair of the Consumer Protection and Commerce Committee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, announced the details of the $3.4 million she secured for specific community projects throughout the 9th Congressional District.

"For years, we have seen many very worthy projects across the 9th Congressional district go unfunded. In various communities, in the realms of education, transportation, housing and other important needs, public funding has come up short or been non-existent. With these community project funding requests, I am proud to have been able to secure these targeted dollars for very worthy projects in the 9th Congressional District," said Congresswoman Schakowsky. "We must acknowledge that many segments of our community fall between the cracks when it comes to being able to access resources needed to serve our region. Our state, county and municipal budgets are all strained with responding to this pandemic while seeing reduced income from property and sales taxes, so funding for many vital projects may often get delayed or forgotten. These federal dollars can help fill in some of those gaps."

The projects funded in Illinois' 9th Congressional District are:

  • $450,000 for YWCA Evanston/North Shore Domestic Violence Shelter
  • $450,000 for New Life Interim Housing Renovation
  • $600,000 for the Village of Arlington Heights - Race & Chicago Avenue Storm Water Detention
  • $25,000 for Harry S. Truman Middle College, Chicago, IL for career pathways and vocational education
  • $250,000 for Glenbrook High School District 225, Glenview, IL for facilities and equipment
  • $600,000 for Evanston/Skokie District 65, Evanston, IL for a teacher residency program
  • $100,000 for Syrian Community Network, Chicago, IL for hybrid learning support
  • $50,000 for Rohingya Culture Center, Chicago, IL for a homework help program
  • $375,000 for Skokie-Morton Grove School District 69, Skokie, IL for community school supports, technology, and academic enrichment
