SCHAKOWSKY ANNOUNCES PASSAGE OF TRANSPORTATION BILL BY HOUSE

BILL INCLUDES $14 MILLION FOR CRITICAL PROJECTS FOR 9TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Representatives Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) announced the House passage of a major transportation bill that would help create jobs and bring $14 million for critical projects to the 9th Congressional District. The Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users or TEA LU is a $280 billion bill that funds thousands of public works, highway and transportation infrastructure projects throughout the country.

"This is a win-win bill for my District and our state. The nation's transportation infrastructure is in need of immediate repair and millions of Americans are in need of jobs. TEA LU will help accomplish both of these critical goals," Schakowsky said.

"Throughout the 9th Congressional District, I am proud to have worked to secure funding for projects to ease congestion, reduce commute times, invest in alternative transportation and improve safety. These funds will help us to preserve and to beautify our commercial and residential corridors, while generating new jobs in our district," Schakowsky added.

"I commend Congressman Bill Lipinski for his leadership and for helping to provide our district and Illinois much needed federal transportation funds. It is a shame, however, that President Bush is threatening to veto both the House and Senate bills at a time when our nation is in desperate need of jobs," Schakowsky added.

TEA LU was approved by the House of Representatives, while the Senate has yet to act on similar legislation.
