SCHAKOWSKY APPOINTED TOP DEMOCRAT ON KEY CONSUMER PROTECTION PANEL

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee and a Chief Deputy Whip, was appointed to serve as the top Democrat on a key consumer safety and protection subcommittee.

Schakowsky, a longtime consumer advocate who in 1969 successfully led the campaign to put freshness dates on products sold in grocery stores, was appointed ranking Democrat on the Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection subcommittee.

"I am very pleased to have this opportunity to serve as the ranking Democrat on the Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection Subcommittee," Schakowsky said.

"I look forward to working with Congressman Dingell, the Dean of the House of Representatives and the long-time Democratic leader of the Committee, and my colleagues on critical consumer issues such as health care, privacy, and product and food safety," Schakowsky added.

The Subcommittee's jurisdiction includes product liability, motor vehicle safety, interstate and foreign commerce, regulation of commercial practices, including sports-related matters, and regulation of travel, tourism, and time. The Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Federal Trade Commission, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are agencies which fall under the Subcommittee's Jurisdiction.
