SCHAKOWSKY: BUSH ADMINISTRATION'S MISSTATEMENT OF THE DAY -
THE ECONOMY AND JOBS
WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) issued today's "Bush Administration's Misstatement of the Day" on the economy and jobs.
The Bush Administration's Commerce Department announced today that the economy grew at its fastest rate in almost 20 years and "the gross domestic product, or GDP, which measures total output within U.S. borders, advanced at an 8.2% annual rate - the same as the department estimated a month ago and more than double the 3.1% pace posted in the second quarter." Reacting to the announcement, Secretary of Commerce Don Evans said:
"President Bush's pro-growth policies are clearly unleashing our economic potential. Despite the positive signs, the President will not rest until every American seeking work can find a job."
However, Schakowsky said, "President Bush has the worst job creation record since the Great Depression and his Administration has gone 33 months without creating a single new net private sector job - the longest job slump since Herbert Hoover. Almost nine million Americans are without work, and since President Bush took office, three million private sector jobs have been lost."
- States job growth is lagging
- The Bush Administration's "Jobs and Growth" tax cut package is failing to create enough jobs
- 48 out of 50 states have lost manufacturing jobs
