SCHAKOWSKY: BUSH ADMINISTRATION'S MISSTATEMENT OF THE DAY - JOBS AND THE ECONOMY
WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) issued today's "Bush Administration's Misstatement of the Day" on jobs and the economy.
In a speech today to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, U.S. Treasury Secretary John Snow touted the Bush economic record. He stated: "In the last four months, over 300,000 jobs have been created, putting the economy on the right path ..."
However, in the last four months, 600,000 people have entered the workforce. And according to http://intranet.house.gov/apps/list/press/il09_schakowsky/www.jobwatch.org:
The Bush Administration called the tax cut package, which was passed in May 2003 and took effect in July 2003, its "Jobs and Growth Plan." The president's economics staff, the Council of Economic Advisers (see background documents), projected that the plan would result in the creation of 5.5 million jobs by the end of 2004-306,000 new jobs each month, starting in July 2003.
Schakowsky said, "Where are the jobs, Mr. President? At a time when 9 million Americans are out of work, the Bush economic plan has failed to create a single new net private sector job. The President's so-called job growth package has even failed to create 150,000 jobs a month, the level needed each month just to keep up with the workers entering the job market."
