SCHAKOWSKY: BUSH ADMINISTRATION'S MISSTATEMENT OF THE DAY -
JOBS AND THE ECONOMY

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) issued today's "Bush Administration's Misstatement of the Day" on jobs and the economy.

Following reports that the economy grew by 7.2% in the last quarter, President Bush said during a visit to Columbus, Ohio:

"The tax cut was good for job creation. The two tax cuts were an integral part of creating the conditions for growth." (President Bush in Columbus, OH, 10/30/2003)

However, President Bush has the worst record of job creation since President Herbert Hoover and the Great Depression and the unemployment rate is at 6.1%:

  • Columbus, Ohio has lost 16,000 jobs since President Bush took office - almost 2% of the city's entire workforce. (Bureau of Labor Statistics, Metropolitan Report, 10/29/03)
  • Ohio has lost 67,000 non-farm jobs in the last year. (Bureau of Labor Statistics)
  • 165,000 jobs have been lost in the past three months.
  • 40,000 jobs in education we lost in September alone
  • In less than three years, 3.2 million jobs disappeared, including 2.5 million manufacturing jobs
  • Nine million people are out of work
