Schakowsky Calls for Illinois to Withdraw from Interstate Voter Registration Crosscheck System

August 10, 2017

Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky sent a letter to William J. Cadigan, Chairman of the Illinois State Board of Elections, calling for Illinois to withdraw from the Interstate Voter Registration Crosscheck System. The letter raises concerns that the Crosscheck System may be used to improperly purge voters from the rolls and could put Illinoisans’ personal information at risk. Participation in the program has been promoted by Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, Vice Chair of President Trump’s Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity. In July, the Illinois State Board of Elections refused to provide voter information requested by the PresidentTrump’s Commission, but Illinois is still part of the Interstate Crosscheck System.

“When the Board meets this month, I hope members will carefully examine the problems presented by the Crosscheck System and consider alternative options to promote participation of all legitimate voters,” Congresswoman Schakowsky writes. “Voters deserve to know that both their right to vote and their personal information are well-protected.”
