Schakowsky Calls for Investigation Into Safety of Peloton Equipment

April 13, 2021

WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip and Chair of the Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee, sent a letter to the Consumer Product Safety Commission asking them to immediately investigate if equipment from the home fitness company Peloton poses a threat to American consumers and their families.

"With families spending more time at home and together, home exercise equipment dangers are especially worrisome, and any potential risks to consumers and their families must be carefully scrutinized," Schakowsky wrote. "The CPSC must be able to act nimbly in identifying and responding to emerging hazards. In addition to the absence of publicly available information about the child fatality, other publicly reported incidents involving the same treadmill model suggest potential obstacles preventing the Commission from taking swift action to protect the public."

Recent media reports have indicated that a child is dead due to an incident involving a Peloton treadmill. In 2019, nearly 23,000 serious injuries were reported due to home treadmills, including 2,000 involving children under 8 years old.
