Schakowsky Calls on President Trump to Recertify Iran Nuclear Agreement

October 4, 2017

Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Chief Deputy Whip, joined more than 180 members of Congress, including the entire House Democratic Leadership, on a letter urging President Trump to recertify Iran’s compliance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), better known as the “Iran Deal”. The letter, led by Representatives David Price (D-NC) and Ted Deutch (D-FL), comes in response to recent suggestions by President Trump that the administration may withhold certification of Iran’s compliance with the JCPOA, which must be re-certified every three months under the terms of the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act (INARA). After signing the letter, Rep. Schakowsky released the following statement:

“The Iran Deal was a great triumph of diplomacy and an enormous step forward in preventing a nuclear armed Iran. Pulling out of the agreement now would be a grave mistake with enormous consequences. Maintaining our commitment to the JCPOA will allow us to continue our vigilant oversight of Iran’s nuclear ambitions. In this letter, more than 180 of my Democratic colleagues and I are unequivocally telling President Trump that this is our best path forward to preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. Our national security and the security of our Middle Eastern allies depend on it.”
