Schakowsky, Cardenas Respond to Rock ‘N Play Study

October 17, 2019

WASHINGTON, DC - Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, Chair of the Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, and Congressman Tony Cardenas, Vice Chair of the subcommittee, issued a joint statement in response to the release today of a study that found that the design of the Fisher Price Rock N' Play baby sleeper led to the deaths of 59 babies. The study found that the product's design is dangerous, causing babies to roll into an unsafe position.

"This comprehensive new study confirms what pediatricians and safety advocates have long known: inclined sleepers cause infant deaths. The Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Play and other similar products flouted longstanding recommendations by medical experts on safe sleep. It's time for all such products to be taken off the market and out of homes. We urge our colleagues to support the Safe Sleep for Babies Act as it moves to the House floor for a vote. We applaud the CPSC for finally taking action to prevent further tragedy involving infant inclined sleepers, but passing this legislation is necessary to ensure we protect all babies as soon as possible." – Congresswoman Schakowsky and Congressman Cardenas
