Schakowsky Commemorates International Women’s Day 2023

March 8, 2023

WASHIGNTON – Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), a Chief Deputy Whip, released the following statement commemorating International Women’s Day:

“Today, on International Women’s Day, we pause to recognize the outstanding achievements of women and girls in the United States and across the globe, and we celebrate the work we have done to improve life for all women. Even amid global challenges, women of all ages, backgrounds, and nationalities are taking on leadership positions, fighting for basic human rights and equity.

“This past year, the rogue, right-wing extremists on the United States Supreme Court took away a woman’s fundamental right to make decisions about her own body. Their despicable decision is not going to stop me from fighting for reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy. Abortion care is health care and health care is a human right. I am looking forward to reintroducing the Abortion is Health Care Everywhere Act, which would ensure that U.S. foreign assistance may be used to provide the full scope of comprehensive health care, including access to safe and legal abortion services, to women all over the world.

“Women's rights are human rights. This is why Congress passed legislation that will ensure workplace protections for pregnant and nursing workers in the United States. We also reauthorized the Violence Against Women Act because all women deserve to live a life free from violence, intimidation, and fear. The United States has a duty to lead in advancing progress toward a future with less gender-based violence and greater equality around the world. The International Violence Against Women Act, which I have championed for years, would help ensure that women and girls around the globe get the assistance they need and deserve.

“Today, on International Women’s Day, let us recommit to making the goal of equity a reality for women around the world. We stand on the shoulders of courageous women who refused to give up. In their honor, we must and will persist."
