Schakowsky Commemorates Juneteenth

June 19, 2022

EVANSTON - Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip, released the following statement recognizing Juneteenth, the anniversary of the day slavery fully ended in the United States:

"Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom. It was only 157 years ago when word of President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation reached the last group of slaves in Galveston, Texas. It is devastating to know that it took two years for the slaves in Galveston to finally learn they were free. The United States was built on the ideals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, but for Black Americans, this fundamental right was denied for far too long. On Juneteenth, we reflect on that momentous day when the last slave was freed, and we reckon with the reality that Black Americans are still fighting for freedom and justice.

"The inequities present in our society today can be traced back to the times of slavery. Black Americans were seen as inferior. Unfortunately, systemic racism has transcended generations. We see this reflected in our education, health, and justice systems, just to name a few. We must all come together to address the deep-rooted racism and hatred that has plagued our nation.

"We cannot allow those who peddle fear and prejudice to take our country backwards. Let us instead celebrate our diversity and take a stand for what we know is right. Justice for Black Americans is long overdue. I will continue to use my platform to fight for a more fair and equitable nation."
