May 7, 2015

CHICAGO – Rep. Jan Schakowsky met with the top three winners in the 2015 Artistic Discovery competition. Each year, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nation-wide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Schakowsky issued the following statement on the three winners:

“I was thrilled to celebrate the three winners of this year’s Artistic Discovery competition. I enjoy this competition each year, and year after year I am amazed at the creativity and skill displayed by all applicants. All three winners from the 9th Congressional District of Illinois deserve high praise. They include the following:

First Place: Amrita Krishnan from New Trier High School, submitted a beautiful scratchboard drawing entitled ‘Cador the Tricolored Heron’ which is depicted on three separate scratchboards to complete the picture of the magnificent bird.

Second Place: Eric Elia from Loyola Academy submitted a very detailed scene of three friends at a Dairy Queen in graphite entitled ‘Celebrating’.

Third Place: Samuel Kim from Niles North High School submitted an amazingly intricate graphic art piece entitled ‘Separation Anxiety’.

“Amrita Krishnan’s piece will be displayed in the Capitol for one year along with the artwork of all the winners from each Congressional district. All three winners are examples of the vast artistic talent in our community and they highlight the importance of arts education. The schools and families of the winners, and all participants, should be very proud of all of their great work.”
