Schakowsky Introduces the Safer Beauty Bill Package to Protect Consumers from Dangerous Ingredients in Personal Care Products
WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip and Chairwoman of Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, introduced the Safer Beauty Bill Package in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Schakowsky announced the package along with her colleagues Reps. Doris Matsui, Lizzie Fletcher and Lisa Blunt Rochester earlier this year.
"As Breast Cancer Awareness Month begins, I am joining my colleagues Congresswomen Doris Matsui, Lizzie Fletcher, and Lisa Blunt Rochester to formally introduce the Safer Beauty Bill Package," said Schakowsky. "After 80 years, it is time that we update our nation's cosmetics laws to ensure our personal care products are safe all the way from production to consumer use. Every day, the average American woman and man use 10-12 personal care products on themselves and their kids, resulting in exposure to an average of 168 unique chemicals. The Safer Beauty Bill Package will ban 11 of the most toxic chemicals; increase protections for communities of color and salon workers who are most often exposed to these toxic chemicals; and make ingredient transparency the new industry standard."
The Safer Beauty Bill Package includes four standalone cosmetics bills:
Toxic-free Beauty Act of 2021
Cosmetic Supply Chain Transparency Act of 2021
Cosmetic Safety for Communities of Color and Professional Salon Workers Act of 2021
Cosmetic Fragrance and Flavor Ingredient Right to know Act of 2021
