SCHAKOWSKY JOINS COLLEAGUES TO SEND CARE PACKAGESTO FAMILIES IN HONDURAS AFFECTED BY HURRICANE MITCHAID TO ASSIST FAMILIES LIVING IN THE TOWN OF MARCOVIA

WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-CA), Congressional colleagues, and members of the Hispanic Caucus joined the international relief and development agency CARE to assemble CARE packages to help families in the southern Honduran town of Marcovia affected by Hurricane Mitch.

Hurricane Mitch killed more than 10,000 people, left hundreds of thousands homeless, and inflicted billions of dollars in economic losses throughout Central America.

In the small town of Marcovia, Mitch destroyed more than 2,000 homes and affected 26,000 residents. CARE is working with the people of Marcovia to build 600 homes, dig community water wells, and plant 8,000 trees.

"Reaching our goal of helping all those affected by Mitch is no easy task. That is why I am committed to working here in Congress with my colleagues and with organizations like CARE to assist our neighbors in Honduras and Central America rebuild their nations after the devastation caused by Mitch," Schakowsky said.
