Schakowsky Lauds Supreme Court Decision in Favor of Women’s Access to Abortion Providers

June 29, 2020

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip and Chair of the Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus Providers & Clinics Task Force, released the following statement after the Supreme Court of the United States struck down an unconstitutional Louisiana law and ruled in favor of abortion providers in June Medical Services v. Russo:

"Today, the Supreme Court has affirmed that access to abortion is constitutional and cannot be unduly burdened by striking down a law that would have left Louisiana with one remaining abortion clinic. This confirms what we must keep shouting out: women will not go back. However, the ruling only applies to one law of more than 450 that anti-abortion politicians have pushed through states since 2011 alone. It's past time for Congress to pass the Women's Health Protection Act and guarantee the right to access abortion across the United States without any unnecessary restrictions."
