Schakowsky Reacts to Musk’s Dissolution of Twitter Trust and Safety Council

December 13, 2022

WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), a Senior Chief Deputy Whip and Chair of the Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee of the Energy and Commerce Committee, released the following statement after Elon Musk dissolved Twitter’s Trust and Safety Council:

“When he acquired Twitter, Elon Musk promised to eliminate bots, build a subscription service, and strictly enforce Twitter’s standards for illegal content. After only two months at the helm, it is clear he has failed in all three areas.

“Making matters worse, Elon Musk is not stopping hate or violence on Twitter; he is causing it. Last night, Musk dissolved Twitter’s Trust and Safety Council. This followed his doxing of Twitter’s own employees in a failed attempt to show biased decision-making at the company. The Twitter Files are a dud. What they have actually shown is committed, thoughtful employees grappling with hard decisions. Musk’s doxing of these employees is the type of harassment that leads to potential acts of real-world violence. Some of the former employees have fled their homes and been subjected to a flood of online hate. Like Alex Jones targeting the Sandy Hook parents, Musk is putting real people in harm's way. And like Jones, he should face the consequences of his illegal actions.”
