Schakowsky Statement on Anthem Data Breach

February 7, 2015

WASHINGTON, DC – This week, Anthem, the second-largest health insurance company in the United States, announced that up to 80 million customer records have been hacked. Rep. Jan Schakowsky issued the following statement in response:

"I am deeply concerned about the Anthem data breach that compromised the personal information of up to 80 million people. Americans expect and deserve - and are promised, in the case of records under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act - that their personal information will be protected by health insurance companies. All personally identifiable information, including email addresses, employment, and income data, must be protected. As the Energy and Commerce Committee considers legislation to bolster data security, we must learn from this failure and pass a bill that significantly reduces the likelihood of this recurring in the future. I will continue to work to get that done."
