Schakowsky Statement on Chicago's Lawsuit Against the Trump Administration

August 7, 2017

Rep. Jan Schakowsky, a Chief Deputy Whip, issued the following statement after the City of Chicago filed a federal lawsuit to block the Trump Administration’s efforts to deny federal crime prevention grants to welcoming cities:

“I applaud Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the City of Chicago for standing up for our values and for our tradition of welcoming immigrants from all over the world. The Trump Administration’s attempts to blackmail Chicago and other cities is not only un-American but also unsafe. Immigrants will be more hesitant to cooperate with local law enforcement if going to the police risks separating their families. I join Chicago in calling on President Trump’s Justice Department to abandon its dangerous and unconstitutional anti-immigrant agenda.”
